Metro
Since Rome is home to thousands of years of history, all very fragile, there are only two metro lines in the city. There is also a line that goes to the Leonardo Da Vinci airport. These two lines are good for getting from one side of the city to the other. They are also good if you stay out of the center of the city like I did. The trains get very crowded during rush hour when people are getting off work. Make sure to be cautious and observant of your surroundings to avoid pickpockets.

I only used the bus system to get between my hostel and the center of the city. However, I imagine that there is pretty extensive bus service in the city centre. The bus I rode was pretty reliable and I did not have to wait very long for it to arrive. However, like the metro it gets extremely crowded during peak hours. Chances are you will have to stand during these hours. Overall the bus is a pretty convenient way to get around.
